What to look for when selecting your next entertainment center

Looking for a stylish and functional way to update your living or media room? A custom, built-in cabinet design or extended media center is one way to go. Here are a few design elements to look for when hunting for your new storage solution:

- Make the appropriate measurements and bring them with you when you go shopping. You'll need to know the dimensions of the space you have to work with so you don't end up buying something that doesn't fit in your home.

- Decide on an overall design that will best suit your needs. Are you looking to hide unsightly cords, game systems and other accessories like DVDs, CDs and games? A custom media center featuring closed cabinet doors and drawers may be just what you need. You can also opt to have cabinet doors installed to hide the television when it's not in use.

- If you want to use your cabinet design as both a storage solution and decorative addition to your home, consider a unit that has both closed cabinets and open shelving. A mixed medium design allows you to store electronics and hide cords behind cabinet doors. Use the open shelves to display your movie, book or CD collection along with other trinkets and mementos, such as family pictures.
